How We Review
This page explains how we research and compare pickleball equipment, how we choose our picks, and how the Chan Long Score works.
Our process
- Define the criteria first. Before comparing products, we decide what matters for that category and that type of player. A beginner paddle and an advanced power paddle are judged on different priorities.
- Build the shortlist. We gather current models from established and emerging brands, then remove products that are discontinued, hard to buy, or not suited to the category.
- Research each product. We compare published specifications, materials, construction, weight, grip and handle dimensions, warranty terms, and approval status for sanctioned play.
- Check the wider evidence. We read independent expert coverage and look for consistent patterns in what players report about durability and feel. We do not copy or display retailer customer reviews or star ratings.
- Score, rank, and explain. We apply the Chan Long Score, then explain each pick in plain language, including its drawbacks and who should choose something else.
What we look at, by category
- Paddles: surface material, core material and thickness, weight, grip size and handle length, shape, edge guard, approval status, warranty.
- Balls: indoor or outdoor design, hole pattern, construction, approval status, reported durability.
- Bags: paddle capacity, compartments, shoe storage, materials, carry options.
- Grips and nets: material, thickness, size and regulation dimensions, setup, portability.
- Shoes and apparel: court type, support and stability features, outsole design, sizing, materials, care.
The Chan Long Score
The Chan Long Score is a rating from 0 to 10 that summarizes how well a product meets the criteria for its category. Every product in the same category is scored with the same criteria and weights.
| Criterion | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Performance fit | 35% | How well the design matches its intended player and use, based on specifications and construction. |
| Build quality and durability | 20% | Materials, construction, and consistent evidence about how the product holds up. |
| Value | 20% | What you get compared with similar products in the same price range. |
| Comfort and usability | 15% | Weight, grip, fit, and ease of use. |
| Support and compliance | 10% | Warranty, brand support, and approval status for sanctioned play where relevant. |
Each criterion is rated from 0 to 10, then combined using the weights above. Scores are relative to the current market and can change when new products arrive or new information emerges. Brands cannot pay to change a score.
How we choose top picks
For each roundup, we name a best overall choice and picks for specific needs, such as budget, control, or power. Each article includes a short “How we picked” section that lists the criteria used.
Keeping reviews current
We revisit roundups when new models launch or products change, and every article shows its last updated date.
What we do not do
We do not accept payment for coverage or scores, we do not invent specifications or results, and we do not claim experience we do not have. Read our Editorial Policy for more.
